Comparison Of Sources
Source A:David Marshall ,a political leader, in a public speech under the apple tree at Old Parliament House, 1956.
Merdeka! People of Singapore ! Last year, this time,in the month of March: a time of agony. I came before you, day after day at lunchtime,to speak to you of the dangers that the future held and to put before you a blueprint for a miracle.I did not dare believe, that you would give us an opportunity to make that miracle possible.I think you know, when I was first elected and appointed Chief Minister, I was told I had no office , no clerk, no thambi* . And oh they couldn't give me any office-took a long time- government officers were extremely overloaded - and there was a lot of difficult. I had to threaten to bring a desk here and st it up here or in my flat before I could get an office.
Source B:A historian's account of the Chinese Unions in 1956.
From early April until the end of December 1955, Singapore witnessed a staggering 260 labour stoppages , walk-offs , go-slows and sit-downs-if we exclude Sundays, that means more than one labour protest every working day. Out on the streets,Chinese students ignored the government's official closure of their schools, and in a repeat of the previous year locked themselves into their classrooms, where they established their own revolutionary curriculum.
How similar are Sources A and B ?
Similarity
Both Sources, A&B, are similar in content about saying that year 1955-1956 was in a time of chaos.
Both Sources, A&B, are similar in content about saying that year 1955-1956 was in a time of chaos.
This can be seen from Source A, where “Last year, this time, in the month of march:a time of agony.”
This shows that many events had happened during the time 1955-1956, and people were in a devastated mood, because they were in harsh, and poor environment. People were suffering from World War II. When the war was over, people still did not have sufficient food since there was a food shortage, no shelters, and place for them to work.Everything was in a chaos.
Similarly, Source B states that
“ Out on the streets,Chinese students ignored the government's official closure of their schools, and in a repeat of the previous year locked themselves into their classrooms, where they established their own revolutionary curriculum.”
This shows that these Chinese students protested the government to close their schools, thus they locked themselves in schools. They made chaos during protesting. They made the people nervous about what had happened.
Therefore, we say that both Sources, A&B, are similar in content about saying that year 1955-1956 is time of chaos.
Difference
Both sources, A and B, are different in content about kind of the difficulties they had met during year 1955-1956. In Source A, it says that even the Chief Minister of that time did not have a stable working condition while in Source B, it is about the students’ riot and labours’ protest.
“when I was first elected and appointed Chief Minister, I was told I had no office , no clerk, no thambi* . And oh they couldn't give me any official-took a long time- government officers were extremely overloaded - and there was a lot of difficult.
This shows that even the Chief Minister at that time period also did not have a proper working environment, it is such a poor condition, that he did not a helper, a clerk to help him to do the chores. Also, he
had to bring a desk here and st it up here or in my flat before he could get an office.
In contrast, Sources B states that
“From early April until the end of December 1955, Singapore witnessed a staggering 260 labour stoppages , walk-offs , go-slows and sit-downs-if we exclude Sundays, that means more than one labour protest every working day.”
This shows that many people is not satisfied with their working conditions, as it was very harsh and tough. Thus they were not very healthy and do not have energy to do work. Their employers exploited them. So they slacking at work, or leave the jobs as their salaries could not feed their family members.
Therefore, we say that Both sources, A and B, are different in content about kind of the difficulties they had met during year 1955-1956. In Source A, it says that even the Chief Minister of that time did not have a stable working condition while in Source B, it is about the students’ riot and labours’ protest.
